If you manufacture, pack or import packaged goods for sale in India, you need registration under Rule 27 of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011, made under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009. That covers food and FMCG brands, cosmetics and household products, and importers selling through e-commerce. Dealers, manufacturers and repairers of weighing scales and measuring instruments need separate licences, and new instrument designs need model approval.

 

Every package has to carry the mandatory declarations. Broadly, that means the name and address of the manufacturer, packer or importer, the common name of the product, net quantity in standard units, month and year of manufacture or import, the retail sale price, consumer care details and, for imports, the country of origin. Most notices we see come from labels and online listings that miss one of these.
