What It Is and Why It Matters

If your premises prepares, stores or serves food to the public, or offers rooms to stay, the municipal public health department wants to see it before you open. Their approval is the health trade licence. It looks at the place itself, so hygiene, drainage, water supply, ventilation, waste disposal and pest control. Many owners assume their FSSAI licence covers this. It does not. FSSAI regulates the food, the health trade licence regulates the premises, and in cities like Delhi a restaurant needs both.

Restaurants, cafes, dhabas, food courts and cloud kitchens. Hotels, guest houses and lodges. Banquet halls and caterers. Bakeries, sweet shops and ice cream parlours. In many cities, meat, fish and poultry shops as well. The exact list is set by each municipal body, so before you spend anything on the application we confirm whether your format is actually covered in your city.

Getting the Premises Ready

Getting the Premises Ready

Inspectors check practical things. Is the kitchen floor washable and properly drained? Is there clean running water and a working exhaust? Are food handlers wearing caps and gloves, and do you have their medical fitness certificates on file? Is pest control documented? Before we file, we walk through the municipal checklist with you, so the first inspection is the only one.

We will need ID and entity documents, the rent agreement or ownership papers with the owner NOC, a site plan, the property tax receipt, your FSSAI licence and Shop Act certificate, and a Fire NOC where your seating or building size requires it. Most delays come from small mismatches, such as the address on the FSSAI licence not matching the rent agreement. We reconcile all of it before the file goes in.

Keeping It Valid

Keeping It Valid

Most health trade licences run for a year. Renewal needs the fee and, in some cities, a fresh inspection, so it pays to keep hygiene records in order through the year rather than in the week before the visit. We track the expiry, prepare the renewal and deal with any notice the health department sends in between.

Questions clients usually ask

Is FSSAI enough to run a restaurant?

No. FSSAI covers food safety, but most municipal corporations separately require a health trade licence for eating houses. Depending on the city you may also need a Fire NOC, Shop Act registration, a police eating house licence and music licences.

Can a cloud kitchen get a health trade licence?

Yes. A cloud kitchen prepares food for the public and is generally treated as a health trade, provided the premises meets the municipal requirements.

Do you handle the inspection?

Yes. We prepare you for it, coordinate the visit and reply to the observations until the licence is issued.
