What a Trade License Is

What a Trade License Is

A trade licence is the city telling you that you may run a particular business from a particular address. It is issued by the municipal corporation or council, not by the State labour department, which is why it sits apart from your Shop Act registration. Every civic body, whether MCD in Delhi, MCG in Gurugram, BMC in Mumbai or GHMC in Hyderabad, keeps its own list of licensable trades, its own fee schedule and its own conditions. The idea behind it is simple. The city wants to know your trade is allowed in that zone and will not create a safety or public health problem for the neighbourhood.

Shops and showrooms, wholesale traders, restaurants and bakeries, workshops and small manufacturing units, godowns and warehouses, salons, gyms, hotels, guest houses and banquet halls are the usual candidates. If you store anything inflammable or hazardous, you almost certainly need one. Online sellers get caught out more often than anyone. Selling through a website does not exempt the warehouse or office you sell from, because the municipal inspector looks at the premises, not at the sales channel.

Check the Property First

Check the Property First

Most refusals come from land use, not paperwork. A trade running from a residential plot, or from a building without the right sanction, is hard to license, and fixing that later costs far more than checking it at the start. So we begin with the property itself, meaning the zoning, property tax status and building plan. Then we line up the rest, which usually means the owner NOC, rent agreement, ID and entity documents, Shop Act and GST certificates, and an FSSAI licence, Fire NOC or pollution consent if your trade calls for one.

We file online wherever the corporation allows it and in person where it still does not, pay the fee, and stay on the file until it closes. If the licensing or health inspector wants to visit, we fix the date and tell you in advance what will be checked. Objections get answered in writing with the right documents attached. Once the licence is issued it has to be displayed at the premises, and we will tell you where.

Renewals Without Late Fees

Renewals Without Late Fees

Most cities issue trade licences for one year at a time and charge a penalty for late renewal. A change of owner, trade or address usually means a fresh licence or a formal amendment, not a quiet update. If you run outlets in several cities, the renewal dates end up scattered across the calendar and something always slips. We keep a single register for all your locations and start each renewal well before it falls due.

Questions clients usually ask

Is a trade licence the same as Shop Act registration?

No. Shop Act registration comes from the State labour department and deals with employment conditions. A trade licence comes from the municipal body and permits the trade at that premises. Most businesses need both.

Do online businesses need a trade licence?

Often yes. If you operate a warehouse, store or office in a city that licenses that activity, the online nature of your sales makes no difference.

How often is renewal due?

In most cities every year, although some allow you to pay for several years in advance.

Which cities do you cover?

All of India, including Delhi, Gurugram, Noida, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, Kolkata, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Chandigarh, Ludhiana and Lucknow.
